THE IONIC SIDE OF NATIONAL PARK AND GREENHOUSE ASPROMONTE

Walk on the footsteps of the Greeks in the floodplains of rivers dried up now, admire endless views over the rugged coastline, follow the trails of goats!

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival at the airport of Lamezia Terme / Reggio Calabria and transfer on the Ionian coast in the southern tip of Calabria, where we settle into our accommodation.

Day 2: The village of Stilo and Mount Consoles

Departure from the hotel with Minibus 9 places to reach Mount Consoles (1 hour), the Serre.

We will reach in the afternoon, following a steep path, the remains of the Norman castle of the eleventh century., Built on the summit of the mountain Consoles. From here you can enjoy a stunning 360 ° view over the valley and the entire Stilaro “Jasmine Riviera” of the Ionian coast, from Punta Stilo to Capo Bruzzano.

Day 3: Mammola and the “Path of the Greeks”

Departure from the hotel with Minibus 9 places to reach Mount Limina (45 ‘approximately), in the municipality of Mammola, in the National Park of Aspromonte.

In the morning we walk the ancient “ Greek Path ” starting from step Limina, which marks the border between the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian coast of Calabria between the Aspromonte and Serre, along what was the the most important street crossing in greek-Roman times. We reach through a path overgrown with ferns, Mount Kellerano, from which we can take a first look on the breathtaking panorama opened on the Ionian coast. We visit the shrine of St. Nicodemus, patron of Mammola. After a picnic lunch, in the afternoon descent gives us beautiful views and a final flat stretch leads us to Mammola . Return to the hotel with the Minibus. In the evening we will return to the village in Mammola for dinner with the specialty of the place: the swordfish.

Day 4: Mount Cerasia

Departure from the hotel with Minibus 9 seats to reach Staines (about 1 hour), a small village perched on the mountain, in the territory on the border of the National Park of Aspromonte.

We start from about 550 m above sea level and overcome a thousand meters altitude! Along simple and easy trails (with the exception of a few hundred meters through the Mediterranean, which can be a bit ‘prickly …), we reach the top of the Mount Cerasia 1,013 m above sea level, offering in days clear an absolutely breathtaking view of the entire southern tip of Calabria, on Sicily, Etna, Aeolian Islands, Bova rocks, Pentidattilo to the surrounding mountains, including Montalto, the highest peak of the Aspromonte.

Day 5: The valley of the Great Stones

Departure from the hotel with Minibus 9 seats to reach Natile (about 1 hour), a small village in the territory on the border of the National Park of Aspromonte.

Our today’s hike takes us through meadows and pastures of the municipalities of San Luca and Careri, to Stone Hood , the most spectacular monolith of the “Valley of the Great Stones.” During the walk we meet unusual rock formations in the early Middle Ages were excavated by Basilian monks and used as a refuge and place of prayer, known as the “ Fortresses of San Pietro “.

Day 6: Mount Tre Pizzi and Gerace

Departure from the hotel with Minibus 9 seats to reach Ciminà (about 1 hour), a small village in the territory of the National Park of Aspromonte.

Passing the village of Ciminà, reach with Minibus the top of the Monte Tre Pizzi , consisting of three imposing rocky peaks that rise towards the sky, also known as “The three sisters “. From here you can enjoy a magnificent 360 ° view on the Ionian coast, from Punta Stilo to Cape Teulada, and on the high peaks of the Aspromonte.

Light lunch in Farmhouse with cold meats and cheese Ciminà, typical local cheese Slow Food.

In the afternoon we will move with Minibus (1 hour) to the nearby medieval village of Gerace , known as the “City of Churches center”, with its narrow streets, the palaces, the ruins of the castle, the imposing Norman cathedral … Gerace, Orange flag of the Touring Club, is considered one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy!

Travel time in the afternoon: 2 hours vertical drop: 100 m ca. Difficulty T (Tourist).

Day 7: The nature trail of Scialata

Departure from the hotel with 9 seats minibus to reach the town of San Giovanni di Gerace (40 ‘approx). Our last excursion takes us to the very north to the borders of the park. We follow the path of the “ Scialata “, a wonderful path along the stream Levadio, immersed in a green paradise consisting of a green vegetation, wooden bridges and by a thousand water games with waterfalls, waterfalls and small canyons, to arrive finally in a picnic area. The way back allows us to embrace once more with his eyes the Ionian coast and the Aspromonte mountains.

Return to the hotel in the early afternoon.
